It seems Makers build mostly Greenfield (New) projects. Do they ever work with legacy code or other people’s code?

Understanding what kind of work students work on during their day to day time.

We do not make our developers contribute to external projects or extended code bases.

However, there are a number of exercises on the course where developers will have to use code written by someone else (generally a coach) to train a specific skill (debugging and refactoring mostly).

Makers also build projects in pairs, teams, and are encouraged to review code from their peers throughout the course, which means they are exposed to other people’s code, and may have to build on it.
