How does the business model of Makers work?

Makers was founded because the current education system is broken. We believe that talent is everywhere but opportunity is not so we build inclusive routes into tech careers to ensure everyone has the chance to join the tech industry if they want to.

One specific way in which we believe the system is broken is its business model. Whether you go to traditional institutions like universities, or more modern ones like coding bootcamps, most generate their income solely from students.

We think this is a problem. Put it simply, if an organisation, and especially a for-profit coding bootcamp generates revenue from students alone, then it needs to maximise the number of students it trains. They can aspire to do a great job, but the pressure to grow (especially when they're highly funded) means finding people for every cohort is essential.

At Makers, we decided to do things differently. We argued that we should put our financial incentives in line with that of our students. This is why we request a recruitment fee when companies hire our students.

Makers' mission is to transform lives by training tech professionals through the integration of education & employment.

This means that we haven't achieved our mission until you're employed .

What does it mean for you?

  1. This means we're driven to help find you a role you'll love at the end of the course. If we fail to do so, we fail to achieve our mission, but also fail to be profitable and hence invest in our growth.
  2. To achieve this goal we've got a team of experts working full time to help to find you a job. Our Partnerships team meet with employers, tell them about Makers, what you learn on the course and why Makers make great developers. You'll also be supported by our Careers Coaches. These wonderful people train you in the skills you need for an effective job hunt. They run workshops and 1-2-1's on how to create a stand out CV, what to expect in a technical interview and more.
  3. It's about the right role - not just any role. Your first job after Makers will provide the biggest learning opportunity in your career. We want to make sure that the cultures right and you'll be somewhere where you can thrive. Be open-minded, if you dream of being a front end developer but a backend role appears, think of the additional skills you'll learn in that position. We're here to talk through the different pro's and cons. We'd lose clients, lose your trust and lose revenue for putting you in the wrong job, our team will guide you but ultimately, the choice is yours.
