Can employers use the apprenticeship levy for AI training?

Find out how employers can use apprenticeship levy funding to train teams in AI through the Makers AI Academy.

Yes. Employers can use apprenticeship levy funding to train employees through programmes such as Makers AI Essentials, a Level 3 apprenticeship designed to help teams apply AI tools in their day-to-day work.

AI Essentials is part of the wider Makers AI Academy, which helps organisations build AI capability across their workforce, from foundational AI literacy to advanced technical expertise.

AI Essentials: building AI literacy across teams

AI Essentials focuses on helping non-technical teams confidently use AI tools to improve their work.

Employees learn how to:

  • Use AI tools for research, analysis and content creation

  • Automate repetitive tasks to improve productivity

  • Build custom GPTs and work with AI assistants

  • Understand the risks and ethics of AI adoption

The programme runs alongside employees’ day-to-day roles so they can apply what they learn directly in their work.

Part of a wider AI capability pathway

Many organisations use AI Essentials as the first step in building AI capability across their workforce.

Within the Makers AI Academy, organisations can develop skills across three areas:

  • AI Essentials – AI literacy for teams across the business

  • AI Engineering – advanced technical capability for engineering teams

  • AI Strategy – leadership capability for senior decision makers

This approach helps organisations move from isolated AI experimentation to structured AI adoption across the business.
