Can I apply if I live outside England?

Find out whether you can apply to a Makers apprenticeship if you live outside England and how location affects eligibility for government-funded programmes.

Apprenticeship funding in the UK is provided through government schemes that are managed separately in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Most Makers apprenticeships are funded through the English apprenticeship system, which means applicants usually need to live and work in England for the duration of the programme.

Why location matters

Government-funded apprenticeships follow specific eligibility rules. To qualify for an apprenticeship funded through the English system, learners typically need to:

  • Live in England

  • Work for an employer based in England

  • Be able to complete the programme while employed in that role

These requirements ensure the programme meets the funding and qualification rules for apprenticeships.

What if I live elsewhere in the UK?

If you live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, the funding rules are different and apprenticeships are managed by separate government bodies.

Some programmes may still be possible depending on the employer and the role, but eligibility is assessed during the application process.

Bootcamp applicants

Location requirements may differ for bootcamp programmes because they are not funded through the same apprenticeship system.
