What salary will I earn?

Learn what salary you may earn on a Makers apprenticeship and how apprentices are paid while developing technical skills and gaining real workplace experience.

Apprentices are paid employees from the start of the programme, so you earn a salary while developing the skills needed for a career in technology.

The exact salary depends on the employer and the role, as organisations set their own pay levels for apprenticeship positions.

How apprenticeship salaries work

Apprenticeships are real jobs. This means apprentices are hired into roles within an organisation and receive a salary while they learn.

Salaries can vary depending on factors such as:

  • The organisation hiring the apprentice

  • The role and responsibilities

  • The location of the job

  • Whether the apprentice is a new hire or an existing employee

All apprentices must be paid at least the national apprenticeship wage, although many employers offer higher starting salaries.

What happens during the bootcamp phase?

Many Makers apprenticeships begin with an intensive learning phase, sometimes referred to as a bootcamp. During this period apprentices focus on building the foundations of software engineering or data skills.

Because apprentices are employed from the start of the programme, you continue to receive your salary during this training phase, even though your time is primarily focused on learning.
