What’s the difference between an apprenticeship and the bootcamp?

Understand the difference between the Makers apprenticeship and bootcamp, including how each programme works and which route may be right for you.

Both the Makers apprenticeship and the Makers bootcamp are designed to help people develop the skills needed for a career in technology. The main difference is how the learning is structured and whether you are employed during the programme.

An apprenticeship is a paid role with an employer, where you learn while working in a real team. The bootcamp is a full-time training programme focused on building the foundations of software engineering.

Apprenticeships

In a Makers apprenticeship, you are employed by a company from day one. You develop technical skills through a combination of structured training with Makers and practical experience in your role.

Key features include:

  • You earn a salary while you learn

  • Training is combined with real work experience

  • Programmes typically last 18–22 months

  • You complete an industry-recognised apprenticeship qualification

Apprenticeships are often used by organisations to hire new talent or upskill existing employees.

Bootcamp

The Makers bootcamp is an intensive learning programme designed to help people build the foundations of software engineering over a shorter period of time.

Key features include:

  • Full-time training focused on practical learning

  • Intensive projects and collaborative work

  • Coaching and feedback from experienced instructors

  • Preparation for entry-level software engineering roles

Many people use the bootcamp to transition into a career in technology.

Which route is right for you?

The best option depends on your situation.

If you want to earn while learning and work inside a company, an apprenticeship may be the right path.

If you want to focus fully on learning before moving into a role, the bootcamp may be a better fit.
