What responsibilities do employers have during an apprenticeship?

Understand the role employers play during an apprenticeship and how they support apprentices as they develop skills through work and training.

Employers play an important role in supporting apprentices throughout their programme. While Makers delivers the structured training and coaching, employers provide the workplace environment where apprentices can apply and develop their skills.

Apprenticeships are designed to combine learning with real work experience, so employer support is an essential part of the programme.

Providing meaningful work and support

Employers are responsible for ensuring apprentices have opportunities to develop the skills required for their role.

This typically includes:

  • Providing relevant work and projects aligned with the apprenticeship standard

  • Supporting the apprentice’s development through line manager guidance

  • Allowing time for the apprentice to complete learning and training activities

Supporting learning time

Apprentices must spend at least 20% of their working time on off-the-job learning. This includes structured training delivered by Makers as well as learning activities linked to the programme.

Employers support this by allowing apprentices time within their working hours to take part in training sessions and complete learning tasks.

Working with the training provider

Employers also work with the training provider throughout the programme.

This usually involves:

  • Participating in progress reviews

  • Supporting the apprentice’s development goals

  • Ensuring the apprentice is gaining relevant workplace experience

Makers works closely with employers to make this process straightforward and aligned with the organisation’s goals.
