  2. About the Makers Course

What do I need in order to take part in the remote course?

When training remotely, each Makers student should make sure they have:

  • A laptop (we can lend you one!)
  • A good internet connection
  • A comfortable space to work from
  • Headphones and a microphone
  • Registered for a free Zoom account (https://zoom.us/)
  • Downloaded the zoom client from that page (Resources > Download Zoom Client)

1) Borrowing laptops

  • All Makers students are entitled to borrow a laptop from us for the duration of the course, if you'd like to. If you need to borrow a laptop you'll be able to indicate this on your onboarding form once you have a place on one of our courses and our Ops team will post it out to you.

2) Check your internet connection at home

  • All remote working students should have access to a reliable and fast internet connection, which can support video conversations. Whilst working remotely, communicating via video conferencing is essential when collaborating with your peers and will help you build strong working relationships and share ideas.
  • Please ensure you have a good quality internet connection before enrolling on the course. To ensure effective work, we recommend above 20Mb downlink / 1Mb uplink grade - you can check your connection here: https://www.speedtest.net/
  • If your internet speed is above this level , but it provides inconsistent connection, when video conferencing for example, we recommend getting a wifi booster from your internet service provider or using an ethernet cable to plug into your wifi hub can provide a more stable connection.

3) Organise your remote setup workspace

  • We recommend having a dedicated working area at home to set healthy boundaries between work and home life. If this isn't possible, close your laptop and put it away each night to help you switch off.
  • Makers doesn't provide students with monitors at home unless you have a disability or additional access need that makes a monitor a necessity. If this is the case, please contact the Ops Team on ops-team@makers.tech
  • We recommend working at a desk with a comfortable chair, in a well lit area to
optimize your learning. Take breaks, and get fresh air if possible.
